En 2002, Dylan consacrait le volume 5 de ses Bootleg Series à la fameuse Rolling Thunder Revue, sa tournée culte de l’automne 1975/printemps 1976, jusqu'alors seulement immortalisée par l'album Hard Rain. Une embardée de 57 concerts qui faisait suite à la sortie de l’un de ses meilleurs disques, Blood on the Tracks, et pour laquelle il s’est notamment entouré de son ex Joan Baez, de Roger McGuinn du Band, de Joni Mitchell, mais aussi de Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Kinky Friedman, Bob Neuwirth, T-Bone Burnett, du guitariste de David Bowie Mick Ronson et de la violoniste Scarlet Rivera. Cette tournée fut exceptionnelle car atypique dans le parcours de son auteur. Les chansons de Dylan (alors âgé de 34 ans et en plein chaos sentimental) trouvaient un habillage original mêlant tradition folk (l’esprit de Woody Guthrie règne un peu partout), esprit informel « entre potes » et modernité grâce notamment à la guitare glam de Ronson. Surtout, le Zim transforme sa virée de plusieurs mois en barnum rock où le vrai faux chaos artistique régnant est élevé au rang d’art suprême.
Avec The Rolling Thunder Revue : The 1975 Live Recordings, les dylanophiles vont s’évanouir : 148 titres (dont plus de 100 jamais publiés !) sur 14 disques pour plus de 10 heures et demie de musique ! Cette caverne d’Ali Baba réservée à ses fans hardcore réunit les cinq concerts enregistrés de la tournée, dans leur intégralité, ainsi que les répétitions aux studios SIR à New York et au Seacrest Motel à Falmouth. Sans oublier un disque bonus compilant d’autres performances rares extraites de cette Rolling Thunder Revue. Il faut prendre le temps de se plonger dans ce long mais passionnant document historique. Une tranche de vie et de création qui met à nu le cas Dylan dans toute sa complexité. Son rapport à la tradition. Sa façon d’exister dans son temps. Son rapport à l’écriture mais aussi à ceux qui l’entourent. En 2002, Dylan consacrait le volume 5 de ses Bootleg Series à la fameuse Rolling Thunder Revue, sa tournée culte de l’automne 1975/printemps 1976, jusqu'alors seulement immortalisée par l'album Hard Rain. Une embardée de 57 concerts qui faisait suite à la sortie de l’un de ses meilleurs disques, Blood on the Tracks, et pour laquelle il s’est notamment entouré de son ex Joan Baez, de Roger McGuinn du Band, de Joni Mitchell, mais aussi de Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Kinky Friedman, Bob Neuwirth, T-Bone Burnett, du guitariste de David Bowie Mick Ronson et de la violoniste Scarlet Rivera. Cette tournée fut exceptionnelle car atypique dans le parcours de son auteur. Les chansons de Dylan (alors âgé de 34 ans et en plein chaos sentimental) trouvaient un habillage original mêlant tradition folk (l’esprit de Woody Guthrie règne un peu partout), esprit informel « entre potes » et modernité grâce notamment à la guitare glam de Ronson. Surtout, le Zim transforme sa virée de plusieurs mois en barnum rock où le vrai faux chaos artistique régnant est élevé au rang d’art suprême.
Avec The Rolling Thunder Revue : The 1975 Live Recordings, les dylanophiles vont s’évanouir : 148 titres (dont plus de 100 jamais publiés !) sur 14 disques pour plus de 10 heures et demie de musique ! Cette caverne d’Ali Baba réservée à ses fans hardcore réunit les cinq concerts enregistrés de la tournée, dans leur intégralité, ainsi que les répétitions aux studios SIR à New York et au Seacrest Motel à Falmouth. Sans oublier un disque bonus compilant d’autres performances rares extraites de cette Rolling Thunder Revue. Il faut prendre le temps de se plonger dans ce long mais passionnant document historique. Une tranche de vie et de création qui met à nu le cas Dylan dans toute sa complexité. Son rapport à la tradition. Sa façon d’exister dans son temps. Son rapport à l’écriture mais aussi à ceux qui l’entourent.
