En éternel hippie, Neil Young n’a jamais lâché l’affaire lorsqu’il s’est agi de jouer les militants anti-ceci ou pro-cela. Surtout lorsque l’environnement était au centre des débats… Même au disque, le Loner n’a jamais hésité à signer des rengaines soutenant ses déclarations. Avec The Monsanto Years, l’affaire est on ne peut plus claire et la cible carrément citée dans le titre : Monsanto, colosse de l’agroalimentaire américain ne lésinant jamais sur les OGM. Neil Young inclut également dans son viseur d’autres bestioles qu’il estime bonne à abattre parmi lesquelles Chevron, Walmart et Starbucks. Mais comme il est tout de même question de musique, l’emballage du message est-il aussi emballant ? La réponse est clairement oui ! A l’aube de ses 70 ans, le vieux bison canadien signe un disque rageur conçu notamment avec les fils de Willie Nelson, Lukas et Micah. Du rock’n’roll simple et costaud qui ne cherche pas à réinventer la roue mais qui préfère s’adosser contre ses acquis. Dans les ballades sublimes où sa voix est certes de plus en plus borderline, il est unique (Wolfman). Dans les secousses sismiques guitaristiques à la Crazy Horse, on le rejoint de plus belle (Big Box). C’est cette bipolarité qui fait de ce 36e album studio, l’un des disques les plus réussis de Neil Young depuis pas mal d’années. Une œuvre qui restera et durera à coup sûr. © MD/Qobuz
