Après douze ans d’existence, voici le septième album studio de ce trio devenu une référence du slowcore. Après les sorties de Things We lost in the Fire (2001) et Trust (2002), qui ont remporté l’adhésion générale, cet album sorti en 2005 officialise la signature de Low sur l’un des plus gros labels de rock alternatif américain, Sub Pop (Mogwaï, Coco Rosie, Foals...).
Nul ne peut alors douter que le son de Low mérite une attention particulière. Car The Great Destroyer est l’album d'architectes sonores au faîte de leur gloire. Le son de Low y est moins minimaliste qu’auparavant. Le trio (qui s’adjoint ici les services d’un nouveau producteur, Dave Fridmann) fait évoluer très subtilement ses compositions. Mais de là à changer la recette en profondeur, il n’y a qu’un pas que la bande à Sparhawk ne franchit pas.
En effet, si le son s’acoquine avec un rock plus classique, on retrouve tout de même les grandes valeurs de Low : tempo lent, lourd, sourd, engourdissant, aux basses ancrées dans le sol, une rythmique dont la simplicité et la répétitivité amènent rapidement à la transe, des paroles parfois vagues, au minimum mystiques et des chœurs à deux voix qui décollent haut, très haut (« Silver Rider »), dans la tradition du space rock.
Ce que Low aime et ce que l’on aime chez Low, c’est la beauté de mélodies réduites à un ascétisme sombre, quasi religieux (rappel : les époux Alan Sparhawk et Mimi Parker sont des Mormons pratiquants et Sparhawk joue par ailleurs au sein de Retribution Gospel Choir). Preuve ultime de cette maîtrise sonore, Robert Plant choisira cinq ans plus tard de reprendre deux morceaux de cet album pour les inclure à Band of Joy, album de retrouvailles avec son tout premier groupe du même nom.
