Cinquième album de Tracy Chapman, Telling Stories sort en 2000, et est coloré de la présence de la chanteuse américaine de rock-country Emmylou Harris.
La voix de Tracy Chapman gagne ici en douceur : avec un débit moins saccadé, elle est plus posée que de coutume. Plus introspective, la chanteuse semble avoir gagné en maturité. La composition, et malgré une liste d’instruments considérables, est très subtile et se fonde plus sur les harmonies et les sonorités qui se mêlent que sur l’aspect rythmique, ce qui dégage un calme omniprésent. Les voix — et notamment celle d’Emmylou Harris —, qui ponctuent essentiellement les fins de phrases, donnent du relief harmonique et enrichissent la mélodie.
L’incroyable homogénéité de style entraîne une difficulté de citer quelques titres qui pourraient ressortir de l’ensemble : « Wedding Song », « The Only One », « Speak The World » ? Ou le single éponyme de l’album sur lequel celui-ci s’ouvre, « Telling Storries », abordant la complexité entre fiction et réalité ?
Car le disque n’enchaîne point une suite de titres disparates, malgré le fait que Chapman ne semble pas concevoir ses albums en suivant une certaine chronologie d’écriture, il s’écoule au contraire d’un seul flux, tranquille et sans aspérités, et gagne ainsi en suggestion poétique qui suscite rêves et méditation chez l’auditeur. Une démarche artistique dont la fonction, malgré l’importance de l’intime, n’est absolument pas tournée vers une quête égocentrique.
