Représentant des Habsbourg à Naples à partir de 1728, le comte von Harrach était, comme tout homme cultivé de son temps, aussi féru de musique. De retour dans son fief de Rohrau (Basse-Autriche) après son long séjour de six années en Italie, il rapporte toutes sortes d’objets, de tableaux et aussi de partitions qui ont inspiré cet album conçu par Maurice Steger, virtuose du « flautino », instrument alors très en vogue.
Petite, facile à accorder, maniable et aisément transportable, la flûte à bec a suscité une quantité d’œuvres écrites spécifiquement pour elle. Une dizaine de compositeurs italiens se partagent le programme de cet album d’une volubilité très rafraîchissante. Si Naples fut un des principaux centres de l’opéra dans la péninsule italienne, la musique instrumentale s’y est également développée avec autant d’éclat.
Le flûtiste suisse Maurice Steger utilise huit instruments différents pour interpréter les œuvres de Sammartini (dont il est un des spécialistes), Hasse, Caldara, Vinci ou encore Leo, sans parler d’autres petits bijoux ciselés par des compositeurs totalement oubliés mais qui font partie intégrante de cette immense galerie de musiciens du XVIIIe siècle napolitain. On passe avec bonheur des flûtes sopranos à la flûte ténor de la Renaissance, à l’alto ou à celles imitant la voix humaine.
