C’est le producteur Giles Martin, le fils du mythique George Martin, qui est aux commandes de la bande originale de ce film qui raconte l’avènement – pour ne pas dire le couronnement – d’Elton John dans le monde de la musique. Autrement dit, le parfum rétro de ce biopic et de sa BO fonctionne à plein régime, surtout lorsqu’on sait que Giles Martin était aux premières loges de la frénésie pop qui secouait l’Angleterre des années 1960 et 1970. Ses arrangements élégants et punchy sont certes très proches du son de l’époque, mais il apporte aussi parfois, dans certaines textures, un vent de fraîcheur qu’on pourrait qualifier de « postmoderne ».
Le disque ne propose aucune musique instrumentale tirée du film, mais uniquement des tubes de la star interprétés par Taron Egerton, l'acteur qui l'incarne à l’écran. Certes, Ergeton subjugue par ses prouesses vocales, mais il ne faudrait pas oublier la présence d’autres acteurs dans certaines chansons : I Want Love est interprété par Kit Connor, Gemma Jones, Bryce Dallas Howard et Steven Mackintosh, tandis que The Bitch Is Back, Don’t Go Breaking My Heart et Goodbye Yellow Brickroad sont des duos avec, respectivement, Sebastian Rich, Rachel Muldoon et Jamie Bell (qui a la lourde tâche d’interpréter Bernie Taupin, le parolier de prédilection d’Elton John). Mais le morceau de bravoure de cette BO, c’est certainement le délire schizophrène que constitue la chanson qui clôt le disque puisqu’il s’agit d’une reprise de (I’m Gonna) Love Me Again par Taron Egerton en duo avec… Elton John lui-même. © Nicolas Magenham/Qobuz

C’est le producteur Giles Martin, le fils du mythique George Martin, qui est aux commandes de la bande originale de ce film qui raconte l’avènement – pour ne pas dire le couronnement – d’Elton John dans le monde de la musique. Autrement dit, le parfum rétro de ce biopic et de sa BO fonctionne à plein régime, surtout lorsqu’on sait que Giles Martin était aux premières loges de la frénésie pop qui secouait l’Angleterre des années 1960 et 1970. Ses arrangements élégants et punchy sont certes très proches du son de l’époque, mais il apporte aussi parfois, dans certaines textures, un vent de fraîcheur qu’on pourrait qualifier de « postmoderne ».
Le disque ne propose aucune musique instrumentale tirée du film, mais uniquement des tubes de la star interprétés par Taron Egerton, l'acteur qui l'incarne à l’écran. Certes, Ergeton subjugue par ses prouesses vocales, mais il ne faudrait pas oublier la présence d’autres acteurs dans certaines chansons : I Want Love est interprété par Kit Connor, Gemma Jones, Bryce Dallas Howard et Steven Mackintosh, tandis que The Bitch Is Back, Don’t Go Breaking My Heart et Goodbye Yellow Brickroad sont des duos avec, respectivement, Sebastian Rich, Rachel Muldoon et Jamie Bell (qui a la lourde tâche d’interpréter Bernie Taupin, le parolier de prédilection d’Elton John). Mais le morceau de bravoure de cette BO, c’est certainement le délire schizophrène que constitue la chanson qui clôt le disque puisqu’il s’agit d’une reprise de (I’m Gonna) Love Me Again par Taron Egerton en duo avec… Elton John lui-même. © Nicolas Magenham/Qobuz
