L'opus déroule ses dix chansons à la manière d'un film (tragique), débutant par un travelling sous la pluie suivi du majestueux « The Road to Hell (Part 1) » et de sa suite jumelle. La voix profonde de Chris Rea accroche et son jeu de guitare slide glisse sur ses compositions les plus travaillées. Des morceaux comme « Tell Me There's a Heaven » ou « Daytona » font tout autant penser à Mark Knopfler et Dire Straits qu'à J.J. Cale ou Eric Clapton, ce qui ne sont pas de petites références.
Chris Rea maîtrise ce style blues rock laid-back à merveille, et The Road to Hell réserve d'excellents moments à qui ne le connaît que par ses tubes largement diffusés en radio.
