Time Fades Away, Live Rust, Weld, Arc, Year of the Horse, MTV Unplugged, Earth, etc. Neil Young a toujours pensé à documenter ses concerts. Dans ce domaine, il a même appuyé sur l’accélérateur avec ses Archives Series proposant une dizaine d’autres live, souvent inédits, captés tout au long de sa vaste carrière… Enregistré à Toronto en septembre 2003, Return to Greendale provient de la tournée Greendale. C’est en fait le tracklisting complet et chronologique de ce disque et rien d’autre ! Légère frustration donc de n’entendre que ces dix chansons, intéressantes soient-elles. Pas illogique non plus car le projet Greendale est un concept-album, sorte de roman musical racontant l'histoire d'une famille confrontée à un meurtre dans la petite ville de Greendale. Le rock aux accents folk, blues et country de la version studio devient un brin plus nerveux sur scène – juste un brin – mais demande l’attention et la concentration qu’exige tout concept-album digne de ce nom. Avec ses fidèles de Crazy Horse (le batteur Ralph Molina, le bassiste Billy Talbot et le guitariste Frank "Poncho" Sampedro), Neil Young tire des portraits touchants de personnages parfois pittoresques, histoire de faire passer les messages politiques et écologiques qui lui tiennent tant à cœur. © Max Dembo/Qobuz
