Chacun a sa façon, Angélique Kidjo et Ibrahim Maalouf sont des légendes, qui ont fait bouger les lignes en installant sur le devant de la scène des musiques souvent condamnées aux coulisses. La première, d’origine béninoise, est sans doute la chanteuse africaine la plus connue au monde, y compris des gens qui n’écoutent pas de musique africaine. Le second, trompettiste d’origine libanaise, remplit des salles comme une rock-star avec une musique qui brasse (entre autres) le jazz et l’Orient. Leur rencontre au sommet sur Queen of Sheba relate en sept chansons la relation amoureuse entre deux autres légendes d’Afrique et d’Orient : Makeda la reine de Saba et Salomon, roi d’Israël. Cette histoire est racontée à la fois dans la bible et le coran, et aujourd’hui sur Queen of Sheba. Le projet est né en 2018 pour la scène, et ça s’entend sur sa version studio. Le duo aurait pu céder à la tentation du kitsch exotique, et illustrer l’antique romance entre Makeda et Salomon avec une bande-son de péplum hollywoodien. Il y a bien un orchestre à cordes dans le décor des chansons, mais c’est d’abord l’énergie frontale du live que ce disque restitue. Entre la rythmique groovy, les arrangements orchestraux, les ponctuations débridées de la trompette d’Ibrahim Maalouf et la voix électrisante d’Angélique Kidjo, la fusion fonctionne à merveille : les chansons sont dévalées sans une seconde d’ennui et restent d’une simplicité qu’on peut qualifier de biblique, vu le contexte. © Stéphane Deschamps/Qobuz
