Décortiqué. Dépecé. Etudié. Analysé. Pet Sounds a sans doute subi tout ce qu’un enregistrement peut subir… On a souvent tendance à encager l’histoire de la pop et du rock au moyen de l’équation Beatles et/ou Rolling Stones, impossible pourtant de négliger ce monument de 1966, sorti du cerveau génial et dérangé de Brian Wilson, leader de Garçons Plagistes qu’on croyait cantonnés ad-vitam-aeternam à la gentille mais un peu anecdotique surf music… Avec leur chef d’œuvre Rubber Soul, les Beatles ont fait bien plus que faire entrer la pop dans l’ère adulte. Wilson veut lui aussi plonger l’essence insouciante et adolescente de ce genre dans la complexité de constructions symphoniques quasi-baroques. Même sa prose quitte avec Pet Sounds l’hédonisme de la plage, des voitures et du surf pour toucher une matière un brin plus essentielle comme l’être humain, l’artiste et même Dieu ! Pet Sounds a de génial qu’il demeure, malgré ce sérieux de façade, un disque foncièrement pop. Pop pour popular. Les mélodies simplement démentielles sont accrocheuses et dégustables dès la première écoute. A l’image du Wouldn't It Be Nice qui ouvre l’album. Derrière cette aisance mélodique, les expérimentations sonores de Brian Wilson n’ont rien de gadget. Surtout que parallèlement aux merveilles du binôme Lennon/McCartney, les travaux du génial Phil Spector font, eux aussi, plus qu’intriguer le Californien joufflu qui ose avec Pet Sounds de nombreuses innovations techniques. Re-recording, instrumentations ovni, utilisation originale de la réverbération et de l’écho, structure complexe de certaines mélodies, titres instrumentaux, tout y passe sans pour autant qu’au final une quelconque sensation de catalogue pour savant fou ne prenne le dessus sur le Graal unique : la musique. Sur God Only Knows, harmonies vocales, arrangements à la pince à épiler, mélodies plurielles et chœurs célestes fusionnent dans un éther de pureté pop inégalée. Les fans américains de la première heure des Beach Boys seront évidemment déboussolés par Pet Sounds à sa sortie. Mais outre-Manche, l’accueil sera alors bien plus chaleureux et émerveillé. Aujourd’hui encore et sans doute demain voire même après-demain, ce disque demeure le maître-étalon d’un style musical, la règle d’un jeu sucré, d’apparence aisé, mais au final bien plus complexe qu’il n’y parait… © MZ/Qobuz
