Sur Oxnard, Anderson .Paak continue son road trip sur la côte californienne après Venice en 2014 puis le déjà classique Malibu en 2016. Au centre d’un mélange jouissif de chant soul, de rap funk et de percussions afro-caribéennes, Anderson .Paak a franchi un cap à chaque album. Sa versatilité à toute épreuve est une parfaite symbiose du style californien actuel, entre les équipes indépendantes comme TDE et notamment SZA, Odd Future avec The Internet ou le toujours présent label Stones Throw, pétri des rythmes infectieux de Tuxedo ou Dâm-Funk. En remontant à Oxnard, sa ville natale, Anderson .Paak renoue aussi avec la liberté totale de ce berceau de hippies érudits qui a déjà enfanté des spécimens bordés au groove comme Madlib, Oh No, Kan Kick ou Dudley Perkins. Dans une logique plus large mais introspective, Oxnard est une synthèse de cet univers tout en proposant une nouvelle direction.

Car Oxnard est aussi le premier album du rappeur chez Aftermath, le label de Dr. Dre, qui est lui-même producteur exécutif de l’ensemble du projet. Et comme sur Good Kid M.A.A.D City en 2012 avec Kendrick Lamar, Dr. Dre simplifie et polit la formule déjà très foisonnante d’Anderson .Paak pour lui donner un aspect de bande-son complète, celle d’un film tragicomique sur le lifestyle californien dans toute sa splendeur. Chaque morceau a son rôle, sa position, tous les détails sont réfléchis, millimétrés pour faire d’Oxnard une pièce majeure de la musique actuelle. Avec une instrumentation très riche, des structures toujours surprenantes et quelques invités triés sur le volet comme Pusha T, J. Cole ou le trop rare Q-Tip, Anderson continue son exploration d’une exception culturelle sans âge : le funk. Oxnard est une évolution naturelle de l’énergie anarchique de Georges Clinton et Parliament. Il se permet même le luxe de passer sa version gangsta au mixeur-crooner, le G-funk tout puissant de Doggystyle compressé dans chaque caisse claire. Emplis de symboles, les mots d’Anderson .Paak sont explicitement sexuels et sans filtre, jouant sur cette frise chronologique de musique poisseuse.
