Et puisque le deuxième album de Tom Waits pour Asylum Records, The Heart of Saturday Night, fleurait bon le club de jazz enfumé, le suivant sera un live. Un vrai-faux live, en fait, puisque les 30 et 31 juillet 1975, l’enregistrement se déroule dans les Record Plant Studios de Los Angeles dans lequel son manager Herb Cohen a apporté des bouteilles et des chips et surtout rameuté assez de potes pour que cela ressemble à un public de club. Public d’ailleurs au cœur de Nighthawks at the Dinner et auquel Waits s’adresse, entre et durant les morceaux.
C’est l’avalanche d’anecdotes et de blagues en tous genres. Des monologues mythiques tandis qu’à ses côtés s’affaire un quartet composé du saxophoniste Pete Christlieb, du batteur Bill Goodwin, du contrebassiste Jim Hughart et du pianiste et guitariste Mike Melvoin. En bon pianiste de bar conteur, une flasque pleine de Black Jack à portée de main, dans ce contexte live où il est le plus à l’aise, Tom Waits lâche dans le ciel californien de nouvelles saynètes épatantes. À se demander si, avec le recul, ce live (qui se vendra plus que ses deux premiers albums studio) ne synthétise pas le mieux le Tom Waits de ces années Asylum... © Marc Zisman/Qobuz
