Those Damn Crows
Welsh quintet Those Damn Crows keep the spirit of the '70s and '80s alive with their pounding, ultra-melodic hard rock, as heard on their 2016 debut album Murder and the Motive.
The band was formed in 2015 in Bridgend, south Wales, a small town with a big reputation for rock, having produced titans like Bullet for My Valentine and Funeral for a Friend. Vocalist Shane Greenhall, the son of a singer/songwriter, had been performing since he was a boy, and was working as a backing vocalist when he was invited to join his old schoolmate Ronnie Huxford's band, consisting of guitarists David Winchurch and Ian "Shiner" Thomas, bassist Lloyd Wood, and Huxford on drums. Named for the crows which used to attack Huxford's father's vegetable patch, they introduced themselves with the single "Fear of the Broken," which they managed to get premiered on the website of influential U.K. metal magazine Kerrang. Right at the start of their career, before they had much live experience, they were offered the chance to record at the legendary Rockfield Studios, and seized the opportunity to make their debut album, Murder and the Motive, which they self-released in 2016. Immediately hitting the road, they toured incessantly, racking up appearances at festivals all over the U.K., such as Camden Rocks, Steelhouse, Giants of Rock, and Ramblin' Man. Their powerful, anthemic hard rock, topped with Greenhall's soulful vocals, recalled the greats of the '70s and '80s, but with a modern feel that was never self-consciously retro. It drew the attention of Earache, one of the U.K.'s biggest independent rock and metal labels, which signed the band in 2018 and re-released a refreshed version of their debut album; the singles "Blink of an Eye" and "Rock 'n' Roll Ain't Dead" preceded it. The re-release was followed in 2020 by their first proper album for Earache, Point of No Return; the label brought in heavy-hitting metal producers Colin Richardson (Bullet for My Valentine, Slipknot) and Andy Sneap (Opeth, Megadeth) to work on the record. While 2021 brought an expanded edition of that album, 2022 saw them embark on an extensive U.K. tour which included a prestigious appearance at Download. Just like Point of No Return, their next record -- 2023's Inhale/Exhale -- found its way to the upper reaches of the U.K. album chart.
