Coincé entre la country habitée de Tumbleweed Connection en 1970 et le fameux Honky Château de 1972 se niche un album au succès relativement limité – mais qu’il est urgent de réhabiliter à l’occasion de la présente réédition deluxe. Porté par les sublimes arrangements pour cordes signés Paul Buckmaster, ce quatrième album studio d’Elton John est porté par un tube, Tiny Dancer, que les cinéphiles connaissent bien puisqu’il a été réutilisé en 2000 dans Almost Famous de Cameron Crowe. Classé 387e de la liste des « 500 plus grandes chansons de tous les temps » (selon le magazine Rolling Stone), ce titre épique de plus de 6 minutes évoque Maxine Feibelman, première femme du parolier Bernie Taupin. Dans certains morceaux comme Levon, les cordes de Buckmaster sont si présentes et denses qu’elles donnent l’impression de former un duo à part entière avec la voix d’Elton John. L’orgue Hammond virtuose de Rick Wakeman joue également un rôle primordial dans certaines chansons comme Razor Face et Rotten Peaches. Sans parler du piano volubile dont Elton John ne se sépare jamais. A noter que l’album est pétri de références aux Etats-Unis (seul pays où l’album rencontra un réel succès), depuis l’évocation des Indiens d’Amérique dans Indian Sunset jusqu’à celle d’une célèbre chaîne d’hôtels (Holiday Inn). Poignant et luxuriant, ce Madman Across the Water fait donc l’objet d’une réédition agrémentée de versions démos au piano et d’un concert enregistré à la BBC en avril 1972.
