La production musicale d'un artiste est souvent - et logiquement - liée à sa vie personnelle. Pour John Legend tout baigne, à commencer par son union avec le mannequin américain Chrissy Teigen célébrée en décembre 2011 sous le ciel forcément bleu des îles Maldives. Love in the Future est le disque d'un homme comblé par l'amour et par la vie en général, et qui éprouve le besoin de nous faire partager son bonheur.

De là peut être la présence de tempos R&B un peu plus sucrés qu'à l'habitude, la félicité ayant trop sollicité les endorphines du chanteur et pianiste. Ce léger bémol exprimé, il faut convenir que Love in the Future est sans doute l'album le mieux abouti de John Legend. En produisant l'album avec Kanye West et Dave Tozer, il s'est offert la possibilité d'avoir un son percutant qui met idéalement en valeur les chansons.

Et quelles chansons ! « Made to Love » possède le côté félin des grands morceaux de soul, pleins d'énergie sexuelle et de rage de vivre. « Who Do We Think We Are » avec Rick Ross donne une vision de la ballade rhythm 'n' blues telle que pouvait la concevoir James Brown. La surenchère d'échos et de cordes porte le morceau jusqu'au sublime. Pour « Tomorrow » John Legend enfile à nouveau son costume cintré de Sam Cooke moderne. C'est d'ailleurs la seule fois, sur un disque beaucoup moins axé sur la nostalgie que ses devanciers.

L'amour est la meilleure des valeurs refuges, la seule voie pour atteindre le nirvana. John Legend l'a bien compris qui en offre une pleine brassée avec un disque à emmener sur un atoll tropical avec la personne de ses rêves.
