L’illustration de pochette de Lives In The Balance montre le visage en grillagé de la statue de la Liberté ; le ton est donné d’entrée. Politique, radical dans sa démarche. Dans « Lives In The Balance » les vers « Je veux savoir qui sont les hommes dans l'ombre, je veux entendre quelqu'un leur demander pourquoi nous devons les croire quand ils nous montrent nos ennemis », adressée aux politiciens et à la CIA à propos de l'intervention américaine au Nicaragua, amène la puissante organisation Christic Institute à intéresser son auteur à sa lutte anti-impérialiste, antiraciste et anti-répressive.
A l’approche de la quarantaine, une pop star comme Jackson Browne qui prend de tels risques ne passe pas inaperçue. L’album contient ses meilleures chansons de la décennie 80 : « For America », « In The Shape Of A Heart » (qui bénéficiera d’un joli 45 tours de promotion en vinyle rouge bien sûr, en forme de cœur bien sûr aussi), et le terrible « Lawless Avenues » co-écrit avec le Portoricain Jorge Calderon (inséparable de la carrière de Warren Zevon). Bien inscrit dans son époque, le message contemporain pourrait avoir bien sûr vieilli, mais demeure totalement d’actualité.
