Ses disques ont toujours été des petits bijoux d'ironie et de justesse. Peu célébré chez nous en Gaule, John Prine a toujours été un artiste culte de l'autre côté de l'Atlantique. Plus conteur qu'entertainer, le songwriter de Chicago narra comme personne, en 1971, le difficile retour au pays d'un GI junky en plein conflit vietnamien. C'était Sam Stone, titre choc qui n'était pas une énième protest-song baba cool à deux kopeks, mais l'une des premières chansons à se placer côté vétérans. Une perle figurant sur ce premier album éponyme, John Prine, produit par Arif Mardin pour Atlantic et qui lie avec un vrai talent, folk, rock et country music. Ce protégé de Kris Kristofferson, loin d'être un sous-Dylan, s'est imposé au fil des ans comme l'un des portraitistes les plus sous-estimés de sa génération. Et si son humour grinçant l’éloigne toujours de toute tentation neuneu, Prine sait aussi viser et toucher au cœur. Et chez lui, l'anti-establishment n'est jamais bas du front.
