Avec Blue Note et Verve, Impulse! est un des plus célèbres labels de jazz. Une maison qui hébergea bien évidemment John Coltrane mais aussi les musiciens les plus aventureux des 60's et qui fête ses 60 ans en 2021. Difficile d’encager toute la philosophie de cette écurie et pourtant, Impulse Records: Music, Message and the Moment y parvient grâce à ce panorama de 25 titres. Le rouge et le noir étant déjà pris, Impulse! sera orange et noir. Pour tous les fans de jazz, l’association de ces deux couleurs est synonyme d’un nom ponctué d’un point d’exclamation : Impulse!. Un label, une marque, une identité, un look, une époque et des musiciens. Surtout un musicien, John Coltrane, qui enregistrera sous cet étendard, de 1961 jusqu’à sa mort en juillet 1967, certains de ses albums les plus marquants. Une personnification telle que le label deviendra « The house that Trane built » (la maison construite par Trane). Huit années les plus habitées dans la carrière du saxophoniste. Celles durant lesquelles le genre musical vivra une révolution formelle qui le mènera vers le free-jazz le plus furieux.

Comme le souligne cette compilation, le label sera indissociable de cette parenthèse libertaire avec Coltrane mais aussi d’autres épées du mouvement comme Archie Shepp, Pharoah Sanders, Marion Brown, Albert Ayler, Charlie Haden, Dewey Redman ou encore Yusef Lateef, tous présents sur cette compilation. Impulse! offre alors l’une des BO de cette Amérique des 60's en plein dans la tourmente. Celle du conflit vietnamien et du mouvement pour les droits civiques célébrés sur des chefs-d’œuvre tels qu’Alabama de Coltrane, Attica Blues d’Archie Shepp, We Shall Overcome de Charlie Haden & the Liberation Orchestra ou bien encore The Rights of All d’Oliver Nelson, quatre temps forts du disque.
