Adam Granduciel est un magicien. Il a réussi à faire passer son groupe The War On Drugs pour d’intouchables pontes du rock indé américain en jonglant pourtant avec des valeurs sûres du classic rock. Avec Lost In The Dream, album qui terminera en pole position de nombreux palmarès de fin d’année en 2014, il canalise à la perfection ses obsessions : Springsteen surtout, Dylan pas mal, Tom Petty aussi, voire Mark Knopfler période Dire Straits dans certaines parties de guitare. Le cerveau de The War On Drugs emballe certes ses chansons dans un halo sonore chloroformé, un brin shoegaze, mais avance sur un chemin assez dégagé et sans aspérité arty. En 2017, A Deeper Understanding enfonce le clou. Une pandémie plus tard, Granduciel ne déballe aucune révolution mais peaufine cet art qu’il déleste de ses rêveries sans doute propres à la jeunesse. Plus dylanien que jamais, et ce dès le Living Proof d’ouverture, il fait d’I Don’t Live Here Anymore un sommet d’efficacité. À l’image de la chanson titre, une mélodie entêtante ponctuée par une rythmique de déménageur. Ou Harmonia’s Dream et son entrelacs de guitares claires et de synthés 80’s… Ce cinquième album est surtout une belle ode à la détermination. Même dans ses interrogations métaphysiques, Adam Granduciel fait dans la maturité. J’ai grandi, j’ai mûri, j’avance : tous ces poncifs ont une saveur étonnamment singulière dans sa voix. Tout parait cliché mais ne l’est jamais. On imagine déjà les chansons d’I Don’t Live Here Anymore résonner dans des stades sold out mais elles peuvent aussi être l’attachante BO d’une soirée en solitaire barricadé chez soi. Bref, comme ses illustres aînés cités plus haut, le leader de The War On Drugs touche tout le monde et cette cuvée 2021 pourrait bien être son plus grand cru. © Marc Zisman/Qobuz
