The Dead Weather, qui combine les talents de Jack White, Jack Lawrence, Alison Mosshart et Dean Fertita, ne se préoccupe pas tant d’être à la hauteur des attentes soulevées par son projet que de les défier. Ses membres tournent ici le dos aux structures plus carrées de leurs autres groupes en faveur d’une production plus blues et plus improvisée ; le premier morceau de Horehound, "60 Feet Tall", démontre à quel point ce son peut être explosif, des guitares et percussions provocatrices d’ouverture à son point culminant. Jack White et Alison Mosshart s’échangent le meilleur d’eux-mêmes sur "Hang You from the Heavens" et "Treat Me Like Your Mother", dans lesquelles leurs chants et leurs paroles "left, right, left, right" (droite, gauche, droite, gauche) évoquent aussi bien une danse qu’un combat. Horehound est un album fascinant, parfois là où l’on s’y attend le moins.
