Entre ses premières années Prestige et ses dernières années Impulse!, John Coltrane a enregistré pour le label Atlantic quatre albums comptant parmi ses plus importants : Giant Steps (1960), Coltrane Jazz (1961), My Favorite Things (1961) et Olé (1961). En 2020, le premier d’entre eux souffle ses 60 bougies en habits de lumière avec une édition Super Deluxe de 35 titres (le disque d’origine n’en comptant que sept, regroupés ici au début). Tout a été évidemment remastérisé et l’ensemble inclut de passionnantes alternative takes, certaines déjà publiées dans des versions précédentes, d’autres inédites.
Dès l’arrivée du saxophoniste sur leur label Atlantic, les frères Ertegun lui donnent carte blanche et pour la première fois, Coltrane peut passer plus de temps qu'à son habitude en studio pour peaufiner ses prises. Autre nouveauté, il est l’unique auteur de toutes les pièces du disque. La complexité de ce qu’il joue ici est fascinante car elle n’entrave jamais son obsession première : la musique et la mélodie. Comme son fils Ravi Coltrane (né en 1965) le dira des années plus tard : « Les gens aiment parler de Giant Steps comme d’un test pour les jeunes souffleurs et la façon dont il innove sur certains titres. Mais c’est l’accessibilité qui ressort avant tout pour moi. L'accessibilité, malgré la difficulté de certaines pièces. Tout ça reste très écoutable et très joyeux. La musique de John est une joie à étudier et à jouer. Et à écouter aussi. »
Publié en février 1960, le disque a été enregistré dans les studios Atlantic de New York lors de quatre séances réparties sur l’année précédente et réunissant autour du saxophoniste le contrebassiste Paul Chambers, le pianiste Tommy Flanagan et le batteur Art Taylor. A peine deux semaines se sont écoulées entre le mythique Kind of Blue de Miles Davis auquel John Coltrane a participé et la première session de Giant Steps. Aussi révolutionnaire l’un que l’autre, ces deux chefs-d’œuvre n’ont pourtant rien à voir. L’éponyme Giant Steps d’ouverture est une course renversante où le saxophoniste casse des codes que ses sidemen continuent plus ou moins à perpétuer en filigrane. Face à de tels tremblements de terre harmoniques, la beauté mélancolique du thème Naima, l’une des plus belles compositions de Coltrane dédiée à sa première femme Juanita Naima Grubbs, prouve l’étendue de la sémantique hard bop du saxophoniste, entre virtuosité stratosphérique et lyrisme. Enfin, sur le court Countdown, ses phrases laissent entrevoir les prémices du free qu’il développera plus tard. Enfin, sur le court Countdown, ses phrases laissent entrevoir les prémices du free qu’il développera plus tard.
