Obscur et lumineux. Comme une cave sur la Côte d’Azur. C’est là que la bande de Jagger et Richards – fuite fiscale oblige – a mis en boîte le gargantuesque Exile on Main Street, festin de toute une vie où les plats sont country (Sweet Black Angel, Sweet Virginia), gospel (Shine a Light), blues (Shake Your Hips) et viscéralement rock’n’roll (le Rocks Off d’ouverture ou le cultissime Happy braillé par Keith Richards). Les Rolling Stones ont beau être au sommet de leur gloire et du star-system, ce chef-d’œuvre est sculpté dans la tripe, sombre et sale côté son, sincère et brut côté style. Rarement les musiques roots américaines (country, blues, folk) n’auront été conjuguées avec autant d’originalité. Jagger chante comme un gourou habité. Richards taille des riffs de guitare plus sublimes et tranchants les uns que les autres.
