Slalomeurs stylistiques assumés, voire revendiqués, les jazzmen Kamasi Washington et Robert Glasper, le multi-instrumentiste et producteur Terrace Martin et le beatmaker rap Patrick Douthit alias 9th Wonder unissent leurs forces dans un supergroupe baptisé Dinner Party et dont le premier album éponyme assez court a été enregistré aux Chalice Studios de Los Angeles fin 2019. Avec la voix de Phoelix sur quatre titres, ces pointures qui se connaissent quasiment depuis le lycée ont conçu une embardée de soul contemporaine, viscéralement douce et très chill. Une BO aux relents nu soul 90’s sans prétention, misant davantage sur les ambiances que sur la flamboyance technique de chacun. Rythmes moelleux, claviers cinématographiques, cuivres sensuels et guitares jouées en espuma, reste au chant de Phoelix – 100 % velours lui aussi – de pimenter les compos par des textes bien engagés. Comme sur Freeze Tag où il s’en prend directement aux violences policières : “They told me to put my hands up behind my head… I think they got the wrong one, I’m sick and tired of runnin’.” A l’arrivée, un alliage musical de jazz et soul adossé contre de solides beats hip-hop qui n’est pas très nouveau mais dont la réalisation calibrée à la perfection permet de passer une vingtaine de minutes agréables comme un bain moussant.
