On connait le fétichisme de Dany Brillant pour une certaine atmosphère rétro d’après-guerre, ainsi que pour les artistes qui l’ont incarnée. Dans cet album, l’interprète de Suzette rend hommage à l’une de ses idoles de ces années-là (Charles Aznavour), tout en poursuivant son exploration des musiques pop (Et pourtant), rock (Je t’attends) ou slow (A ma fille, en duo avec Katia Aznavour, la propre fille du grand Charles) de cette même période. Il s’agit donc d’une relecture finalement assez étrange des chansons d’Aznavour, puisqu'elle fait intervenir des styles musicaux dont le chanteur décédé en 2018 était lui-même familier (avec son fidèle compositeur et arrangeur de l’époque, le brillant Georges Garvarentz). L’album comprend aussi une forte dose de musiques latines (principalement salsa et mambo), dont Brillant a toujours été friand. Ainsi, les paroles d’une chanson comme La Bohème prennent une tout autre dimension avec des cuivres étincelants et un piano cubain endiablé. Même chose pour Comme ils disent, dans laquelle ce parangon de virilité hétérosexuelle qu’est Dany Brillant prend bien soin de prononcer la phrase clé (« Je suis homo ») comme Aznavour l’aurait écrite à l’origine (« Je suis homme, oh »). En revanche, La Baraka est assez proche des arrangements d’origine, déjà empreints de latinité. Enfin, dans un registre plus posé, on appréciera Ils sont tombés (guitare-voix), ainsi qu’une version crépusculaire de La Mamma, ponctuée par des interventions émouvantes de Lévon Minassian, fameux joueur de duduk (hautbois arménien). ©Nicolas Magenham/Qobuz
