Par ce deuxième album avec Phil Anselmo, Pantera commet non seulement l'album qui ouvre au groupe les portes de la notoriété, mais l'un des albums précurseurs du néo metal. Avec ses racines glam metal, Pantera réintroduit un sens mélodique dans le metal, alors dominé par le trash.
Le chant n'est donc pas seulement fait de hurlements, même si Phil Anselmo est un sacré imprécateur, la rythmique conjugue violence et mélodie, tandis que l'ensemble s'appuie sur des compositions solides. Si « Cowboys from Hell », « Psycho Holiday », et « Cemetery Gates » font désormais figure de classiques, Cowboys From Hell est loin d'emporter l'adhésion lors de sa sortie.
L'importance de Cowboys From Hell est mise en évidence par sa ressortie en 2010, dans une édition double CD reprenant le CD original et des enregistrements en public de la période. L'occasion de se rappeler que Pantera était un furieux groupe de scène, la démesure de Phil Anselmo faisant mouche en direct plus encore que sur disque.
Pantera jette avec Cowboys From Hell, les bases d'un succès qu'il n'aura qu'à cueillir deux ans plus tard avec Vulgar Display of Power. Rauque et novateur, Cowboys From Hell apparaît avec le recul comme un album fondamental du metal des années quatre-vingt-dix, il fait partie de ces disques dont la flamme continue de brûler sous l'éteignoir du temps.

Si « Cowboys from Hell », « Psycho Holiday », et « Cemetery Gates » font désormais figure de classiques, Cowboys From Hell est loin d'emporter l'adhésion lors de sa sortie.
L'importance de Cowboys From Hell est mise en évidence par sa ressortie en 2010, dans une édition double CD reprenant le CD original et des enregistrements en public de la période. L'occasion de se rappeler que Pantera était un furieux groupe de scène, la démesure de Phil Anselmo faisant mouche en direct plus encore que sur disque.
Pantera jette avec Cowboys From Hell, les bases d'un succès qu'il n'aura qu'à cueillir deux ans plus tard avec Vulgar Display of Power. Rauque et novateur, Cowboys From Hell apparaît avec le recul comme un album fondamental du metal des années quatre-vingt-dix, il fait partie de ces disques dont la flamme continue de brûler sous l'éteignoir du temps.
