Et voilà qu'un nouveau tandem fait une entrée saluée d’un Qobuzissime ! D’un côté, un mythe rock plaqué or qui sort occasionnellement de sa tanière : Paul Simonon, ex-bassiste des Clash (sur la pochette de London Calling, c’est lui !) et plus récemment membre de The Good, The Bad And The Queen avec Damon Albarn, (feu) Tony Allen et Simon Tong. De l’autre, la folkeuse Galen Ayers, fille de Kevin Ayers, l’excentrique Britannique cofondateur de Soft Machine. L’album que ces deux-là viennent d’enregistrer est pourtant à des années-lumière de leurs CV chargés d’histoire. Dès les premières notes de Can We Do Tomorrow Another Day?, Galen et Paul jouent la carte du disque troubadour, de la promenade simple – pas simpliste – entre les styles, les paysages et les territoires. Viscéralement cosmopolite et même européen (ça chante en anglais, en espagnol, on y cause de Paris), l’album joue la nonchalance avec un côté chanteurs de rue. Des effluves mariachis, des sonorités reggae, l’insouciance de la variété italienne et française des 60's, le concept de Galen & Paul est rétro sans être désuet, drôle sans être potache, poétique sans être cliché. Le duo est épaulé par d’impeccables musiciens (le guitariste Simon Tong, le batteur de jazz Seb Rochford et Dan Donovan aux claviers) et par Tony Visconti, producteur de Bowie plutôt habitué aux disques à « gros son ». Et puis il y a Damon Albarn qui vient souffler dans son melodica sur quelques titres. En 38 minutes, Paul & Galen nous font faire le tour du monde. De leur monde.
