Ce disque de 1965, le deuxième de Montgomery sur le label Verve, est très représentatif des débuts de sa collaboration avec le producteur Creed Taylor et l'arrangeur Don Sebesky. Si c'est bel et bien le début d'une nouvelle ère pour le guitariste, l'enregistrement en lui même n'a pas différé des précédents chez Riverside : Wes Montgomery a enregistré toutes ses parties accompagné uniquement par une petite section rythmique. Les fameux arrangements d'orchestre et particulièrement de cordes, qui seront à l'origine des mauvaises critiques dans la presse jazz, ne furent ajoutés qu'à posteriori.
L'esprit reste jazz et on est encore loin des reprises pop que Wes Montgomery produira par la suite. Le disque est excellent et quelques compositions sont même devenue des classiques de son répertoire (« Tear it Down », « Con Alma »). Son jeu reste au sommet, toujours aussi efficace, bien servit par une production de bien meilleure qualité que sur les disques Riverside.
Si la musique semble effectivement moins pure, intègre et directe qu'auparavant, elle n'en reste pas moins agréable, d’ou la reconnaissance du grand public et les bonnes ventes qui ont suivis la parution de ce disque. A noter qu’en 1965 la plupart des artistes de jazz perdaient des parts de marché au profit de la jeune génération rock et il était fondamental pour tout ces musiciens de capter l'attention d'un public jeune et plus large que dans les années 40 ou 50. Ce disque, et plus généralement, le succès populaire de Wes Montgomery a d'ailleurs permis à beaucoup d'auditeurs de découvrir le jazz, et d'autres artistes moins faciles d'accès, tel John Coltrane qui était un ami et une grande influence du guitariste.
Wes Montgomery sera touché par les critiques du monde du jazz mais ne changera pas de cap, préférant satisfaire celui qui, dans son esprit, reste le seul vrai juge : le public.
