Les formules les plus simples sont souvent les plus efficaces. A l’instar des White Stripes auxquels ils furent souvent comparés, les deux musiciens des Black Keys enchaînent les albums à un rythme effréné. Une guitare, une batterie, un amour sans limite pour le blues et le guitariste Junior Kimbrough, autant d’ingrédients ayant contribué à forger l’identité d’un duo qui trouve encore le moyen de se réinventer. Si ils ont toujours aimé le vieux son traditionnel auquel ils ont su offrir un petit côté garage, Dan Auerbach et Patrick Carney ont cette fois réussi à intégrer de la soul à leur blues d’ordinaire assez rugueux.
Un évolution que l’on doit en grande partie au projet Blakroc sorti en 2009. Les deux compères y ont joué le rôle d’accompagnateurs de luxe pour des invités de prestige issus de la scène hip hop comme Mos Def, Raekwon ou RZA. Une expérience qui ne les aura pas laissé indifférents. Brothers est le résultat de ce mix d’influences entre les racines des Black Keys et leur envies de groove. Un cocktail savoureux qui fait mouche dès la première écoute.
Le son reste brut mais le voyage ne se limite pas au delta du Mississipi. On remonte doucement vers le Nord. A la fois dansant, rythmé mais toujours sombre, l’univers des deux musiciens de l’Ohio devient plus accessible sans jamais céder à l’appel du refrain gnagnan ou de la production sucrée. Un soupçon de blues rock plus british, un brin de bayou, une gamme plus soul de temps à autre et c’est toute la musique des Black Keys qui prend de l’ampleur sans que le son ne soit modifié. Un exploit qui se déguste à travers le bouillant « Everlasting Light », « Sinister Kid » ou l’excellent « Howlin’ for You ». Et comme on aime les belles alchimies, Danger Mouse revient produire un titre (« Tighten Up », premier single tiré de ce disque) après avoir déjà réalisé un album entier pour le duo (Attack & Release sorti en 2008).
Se faire plaisir et avancer sans jamais rien renier de ses racines peur mener à de très beaux résultats. Un luxe que devraient s’offrir plus de groupes. Il suffit d’écouter Brothers pour s’en rendre compte.
