Aux côtés de Fatboy Slim et autres Prodigy, les Chemical Brothers ont régné sur le dancefloor des années 90. Au point qu’avec leur électro survitaminée, un grand pan du public rock osait toucher pour la première fois à l’électro. Depuis, Tom Rowlands et Ed Simons ont imposé un son, un style, une identité unique où s’entrechoquent acid house, beats hip-hop et psychédélisme pop hérité du Tomorrow Never Knows des Beatles. Et si vingt secondes d’écoute suffisent à identifier un morceau des Frères Chimiques, il en est toujours de même avec les vingt premières secondes de Born In The Echoes. Cinq ans après son prédécesseur Further, ce huitième album du duo mancunien impressionne par sa puissance, sonore comme artistique. Car si Rowlands et Simons font du « 100% Chemical » et ne cherchent pas à réinventer la roue qu’ils ont construite il y a déjà vingt-cinq ans, leur virtuosité transforme en perle chacun des onze titres de ce disque. Tout est là : les boucles psychédéliques totalement hypnotiques, les indices de mélodies distillés ça-et-là, les percussions à l’uppercut et même les invités cinq étoiles triés sur le volet (Q-Tip avec qui ils avaient déjà signé un mythique Galvanize en 2006, Annie Clark alias St. Vincent, Cate Le Bon, Ali Love et Beck). L’autre force de Born In The Echoes est de sonner comme un album de 2015 et non de 1995. Bref, avec cette nouvelle merveille électronique, les Chemical Brothers confirment que c’est bien dans les vieilles marmites qu'on fait les meilleures soupes… © MZ/Qobuz
