William The Conqueror

Cornwall's William the Conqueror traffic in a unique blend of genres from both sides of the Atlantic, from bluesy grunge and classic rock-tinged Americana to anthemic British alt-rock. Emerging in 2017 with Proud Disturber of the Peace, the trio continued to refine their spirited indie rock sound on subsequent efforts Bleeding on the Soundtrack (2019), Maverick Thinker (2021), and Excuse Me While I Vanish (2023). Made up of multi-instrumentalists Ruarri Joseph (vocals, guitar), Naomi Holmes (bass guitar), and Harry Harding (drums), the band came together in early 2017 after Joseph decided to start a project that marked a sonic departure from his more folk-oriented solo material in previous years. The release of the Proud Disturber of the Peace LP, which drew comparisons to Kings of Leon, marked the group's first appearance on the scene, which they went on to promote with live performances nationwide throughout 2017 and 2018. 2017 also saw the band's track "Tend to the Thorns" nominated for U.K. Song of the Year at the U.K. Americana Awards. William the Conqueror spent 2018 writing and recording their sophomore effort with producer Ethan Johns at Real World Studios in Bath. The resulting LP, Bleeding on the Soundtrack, wove together raucous rock with thoughtful folk and undertones of blues and soul. For their self-produced third album, the group headed to the U.S. and worked at Los Angeles' legendary Sound City studio, emerging in early 2021 with the introspective Maverick Thinker. Forced into lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the band could not promote the record and retreated home to England to face an uncertain future. Inspired by the compassion of frontline workers and the opaque areas between creativity and madness, Joseph began writing songs for the band's fourth full-length effort. Recorded on all vintage gear and mixed by Barny Barnicott (Arctic Monkeys, Sam Fender), 2023's Excuse Me While I Vanish saw the band deliver a muscular, nuanced, and anthemic set of songs that underscored their gritty, Southern rock influences.
