« Pour moi, la musique et la performance, ce sont des actes théâtraux. Les sorcières et les fantômes, c’était assez bien pour Shakespeare, alors c’est aussi bien pour moi. » C’est ainsi que Frank Black alias Black Francis, leader des Pixies depuis plus de trente ans, définit son credo artistique. Credo qui informe la direction prise par le septième album studio du groupe préféré de feu Kurt Cobain : Beneath the Eyrie est un hommage à l’american gothic dans toute sa splendeur lugubre, truffé de références au folklore anglo-américain (St Nazaire, Daniel Boone, Silver Bullet) et aux cultures surf et skate (Los Surfers Muertos, Long Rider). On y retrouve les Pixies en forme, avec leur signature musicale : riffs de basse imposants, sonorités latino/surf et guitares acoustiques.
