Même si Becoming n’est pas un album studio classique de Kamasi Washington comme ses ambitieux The Epic ou Heaven and Earth, il n’en demeure pas moins une partition que le saxophoniste de Los Angeles a conçu de A à Z. Destinée à illustrer le documentaire de Nadia Hallgren sur la tournée de Michelle Obama pour promouvoir son livre Becoming aux quatre coins des États-Unis, cette BO totalement instrumentale épouse les images léchées et millimétrées d’une production 100 % Netflix. Pourtant, le son Kamasi Washington, l’approche orchestrale et la pureté mélodique sont bien là ; mais comme lestés de toutes impuretés salvatrices ou velléités avant-gardistes au profit d’une approche nettement plus soul, presque pop. Du Kamasi light qui reste très agréable à défaut d’être génial, même si certains thèmes plus osés comme Provocation rassureront les fans exigeants du saxophoniste… Pour ce score, la production de Becoming n’a évidemment pas choisi le Californien par hasard, lui qui incarne à la perfection l’american dream sous la présidence Obama. Lui, le jeune Afro-Américain militant ayant grandi à Inglewood avant de devenir sideman de Snoop et Kendrick pour finir en star de la scène jazz internationale… Sans prise de risque ni improvisation habitée, Kamasi Washington montre tout de même que dans ce contexte balisé et policé, il peut aussi créer de la musique qui lui ressemble sans se trahir. © Marc Zisman/Qobuz
