Sixun

Formed in Paris, France in 1984, Sixun is an acclaimed jazz fusion group. Originally founded by keyboardist Jean-Pierre Como, guitarist Louis Winsberg, bassist Michel Alibo, saxophonist Alain Debiossat, drummer Paco Séry, and percussionist Abdou Mboup, the group’s line-up would fluctuate throughout the years, but most of the original musicians have remained core members since the group’s inception. Sixun was born during a jam session between these musicians and, within a year, they released their debut album, Nuit Blanche (1985). The band’s sound developed over the course of several more albums - Pygmées (1987), Explore (1988) and Live (1989) – and blended their Weather Report-influenced sound with world and electronic music styles, culminating on the unique sounds found on their 1990 album L'Eau de Là. Sixun’s sound continued to evolve and grow with albums like Nomad's Land (1993) and Lunatic Taxi (1995), which featured guest saxophonists Michael Brecker and Julien Lourau. In 1998, group moved away from fusion and incorporated electronica into a more contemporary jazz sound on the album Nouvelle Vague. After a lengthy hiatus, the group returned in time to celebrate their 20th anniversary, which resulted in the concert album Live à La Cigale (2006). Sixun’s 2008 album Palabre featured more brass added to their sound plus the participation of several vocalists including the rapper Oxmo Puccino. After the release of their Live in Marciac album in 2009, the group went on another long hiatus. They re-emerged in 2022 with the album Unixsity, which quickly rose to Number 3 on the SNEP French Jazz Albums chart.
