Remy Le Boeuf

Saxophonist, composer, and multi-instrumentalist Remy Le Boeuf is known for his nuanced modern creative jazz that draws upon folk, classical, and indie rock textures. La Boeuf initially garnered attention alongside his brother, pianist Pascal Le Boeuf, before earning wider acclaim with 2019's Assembly of Shadows, the eponymous Grammy-nominated debut from his big band. His second Assembly of Shadows album, The Architecture of Storms, arrived in 2021. Born in 1986 in Santa Cruz, California, Le Boeuf initially started on the oboe at age 10 before settling on the alto saxophone the following year. Along with his twin brother, pianist Pascal, he developed an interest in jazz and together they played in various ensembles throughout their adolescence and teen years. After high school, both he and his brother studied at the Manhattan School of Music where Remy earned his bachelor's and master's degrees. As the Le Boeuf Brothers, the siblings released several albums, including 2009's House Without a Door, 2011's In Praise of Shadows, and 2016's Imaginist, the latter of which found them collaborating with JACK Quartet. On his own, Remy has worked with a bevy of progressive artists, including Bob Mintzer, Dayna Stephens, David Liebman, Linda May Han Oh, HAIM, Donny McCaslin, and others. He also garnered accolades for his own composing and arranging work, receiving commissions from SFJazz, Chamber Music America, The Jerome Foundation, Jazz at Lincoln Center, and more. In 2019, he made his solo debut as leader with Light as a Wind, which featured his sextet with Walter Smith III, Aaron Parks, Charles Altura, Matt Brewer, and Peter Kronreif. He also launched his big band, showcasing the group on their eponymously titled 2019 album Assembly of Shadows, for which Le Boeuf earned Grammy Award nominations for Best Instrumental Composition and Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Cappella. Along with performing, Le Boeuf teaches saxophone and composition at Manhattan School of Music. In 2021, he released his second album with Assembly of Shadows, Architecture of Storms, which featured original pieces as well as a cover of Bon Iver's "Minnesota, WI."
