Lapland Chamber Orchestra

Headquartered in the Finnish city of Rovaniemi, nearly on the Arctic Circle, the Chamber Orchestra of Lapland (or Lapland Chamber Orchestra -- both translations from the Finnish Lapin kamariorkesteri have been used) is the northernmost professional orchestra in the European Union. The ensemble has championed Finnish music and also contemporary music more generally, often giving the Finnish premieres of new music. The orchestra performs in Rovaniemi in its auditorium in the Korundi Culture House, tours Lapland and the rest of Scandinavia's Arctic region, Finland, and other countries throughout Europe. The Chamber Orchestra of Lapland was founded in 1972. Its march toward international prominence began with the appointment of conductor and violinist John Storgårds as music director in 1996; a native of Helsinki, Storgårds moved with his family to Rovaniemi and has remained in the post of music director since his appointment, even while accepting posts with larger orchestras. Under Storgårds, the orchestra has become a presence on the European festival scene, with appearances at the Carinthian Summer Festival in Austria, the international Festival Culturel de Musique Symphonique in Algeria, and the BBC Proms Festival in London, among others. Most notable has been the orchestra's recording catalog, far more extensive than those of other small European regional orchestras. The Chamber Orchestra of Lapland has recorded for such prestigious labels as Alba, Dacapo, Ondine, and BIS, beginning with the 2002 album of music by Astor Piazzolla. Several of the orchestra's recordings have received major prizes or prize nominations; a recording of the chamber symphonies of composer Vagn Holmboe was nominated for a Gramophone award in 2013, and a recording of Kalevi Aho's concertos for theremin and horn won Germany's ECHO Klassik award in 2015. A reading of the Clarinet Concerto and Seven Songs by composer Lars Karlsson was issued on BIS in 2018. The following year, the orchestra appointed Tomas Djupsjöbacka its first-ever principal guest conductor, serving from 2019 until 2022. In 2022, the Chamber Orchestra of Lapland, under Storgårds, was heard on a recording of Hans Abrahamsen's Schnee on Dacapo.
