Carolina Eyck

Germany's Carolina Eyck is among the few young exponents of the theremin, the early electronic instrument patented by Léon Theremin (Lev Termen) in the Soviet Union in 1928. Eyck also plays violin and viola, and is the author of the first textbook devoted to the theremin. Carolina Eyck was born in the Berlin area on December 26, 1987. She is a member of the Sorbian minority group in eastern Germany, and there is a Sorbian form of her name, Carolina Eyckek. She took up the piano at five and switched to violin a year later. Eyck was sent to a school for musically gifted children in Berlin, and at age seven she began studying the theremin. Her teacher was Lydia Kavina, Léon Theremin's great-niece and a well-known recitalist on the instrument. Eyck did not abandon her string studies, and she also added composition to her list of specialties. Her composition Physical Formulas won first prize at a youth competition, and her Sciciani-Am Wendish Burgwall, a concerto for accordion and orchestra, also won awards. She later reworked that piece for theremin and orchestra. In 2006 Eyck published the textbook The Art of Playing the Theremin, the first instructional book devoted to the instrument. The following year she entered the master's program at the Royal Academy of Stockholm, majoring in viola; she graduated in 2010 and has performed with the Deutsche Streicherphilharmonie among other groups. Her solo recital career, however, has been focused on the theremin. Eyck has been a popular attraction at music festivals in Central Europe, Eastern Europe, and the U.S. She premiered the theremin concerto of Finnish composer Kalevi Aho and later recorded the work for the BIS label, receiving an ECHO Klassik award in 2015. Eyck often performs with pianist Christopher Tarnow, and in 2015 she recorded an album of theremin sonatas with him. Her recordings, on the BIS, Genuin, and Butterscotch Records labels, often include her own compositions. Eyck released the album Elegies for theremin and voice in 2019. She plays a Big Briar Theremin series 91A and an Etherwave Pro theremin designed by synthesizer pioneer Robert Moog.
