Morningsiders

New York City-based quartet Morningsiders craft melodic, narrative indie folk alternately tinged with country, bluegrass, Americana, and the mellower side of jazz-rock. The group entered the mainstream in 2015 with the viral streaming hit "Empress," and capitalized on that success with the release of their 2018 debut album, A Little Lift, and 2020 sophomore effort, Pollen. The band enlisted producer Peter Katis (Sharon Van Etten, the National) to helm their 2021 EP Easy Does It, which saw them adopt a more concise and accessible folk-pop sound. Magnus Ferguson (lead vocals, guitar) and Reid Jenkins (fiddle, vocals) formed Morningsiders as students at Columbia University in 2012, adding Cody Gibson (bass, vocals) and David Su (drums, vocals). Their bubbly, irregular-metered single "Empress" was featured in a Starbucks commercial in 2014 before they released their mercurial debut EP, Unfocus, in early 2015. "Empress" became a viral streaming hit later that year. Joined by Luther Wong on piano and trumpet, the group released an Audiotree Live session in 2016. In November 2017, Morningsiders returned with "Somewhere in Between," the first in a yearlong series of monthly song releases. Their December offering, "Honey Hold Me," was featured on a high-profile streaming playlist curated by Taylor Swift. Both singles appeared on their first full-length effort, 2018's A Little Lift. Two years later, the group issued the more folk-rock-oriented Pollen, and in 2021 they released the Peter Katis-produced Easy Does It EP.
