Betreten wir die Zeitmaschine. Auf in die 50er und 60er - die goldenen Tage des Sands Hotels in Las Vegas, als das "Rat Pack" - Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin und Sammy Davis Jr. - die feinsten Damen der Gesellschaft unterhielt und die Cocktailparties in der Stadt der Lichter ewig dauerten. Also lockert die Krawatte und nehmt einen Schluck Bourbon – Dandy Robbie nimmt uns mit auf einen kleinen Ausflug.
"Swing When You're Winning" ist eine Hommage an diese gute alte Zeit des Showbusiness, als der Broadway den Takt vorgab und Hollywood gemütlich nachzog. Viele Erinnerungen an alte Filmsoundtracks werden wach. So findet sich auch der George Gershwin Song "They Can't Take That Away From Me" auf der Platte, zu dem einst Ginger Rogers und Fred Astaire über die Bühne wirbelten. Jetzt als Duett mit Rupert Everett aufgenommen, swingt der Song noch immer. Hat man doch die Originalbesetzung der Bigband die einst Frank Sinatra begleitete für die Aufnahmen gewinnen können. Sogar der 83-jährige Pianist – Bill Miller, er begleitete Sinatra von 1951 bis zu seinem Tod – war mit von der Partie und flankiert Robbie bei "One For My Baby".
Mister Francis Albert Sinatra gibt sich dank moderner Technik sogar selbst die Ehre ("It Was A Very Good Year") und lässt Robert Peter Williams spüren, dass er zwar stimmlich noch deutlich entfernt ist vom Meister, aber den richtigen Weg eingeschlagen hat. Auf "Mr. Bojangles" hört man sogar fast eine kleine Träne zwischen den Zeilen – das gewisse Etwas, das ein solcher Song braucht.
Ein echtes Highlight ist auch "Somethin' Stupid". Ursprünglich der Song von Frank und seiner Tochter Nancy, kam jetzt ein zuckersüßes Duett mit Nicole Kidman heraus, die überraschenderweise kristallklar, süß und sexy singen kann. Hut ab. Für echte Studioatmosphäre sorgen die auf der ganzen Platte verteilten kleinen Diskussionen mit der Aufnahmeleitung, den Musikern oder der inszenierte kleine Streit mit Jane Horrocks am Ende von "Things". Stichwort: "Were You Thinking about Kylie?" That's Entertainment!
In der Tat legt Williams mit "Swing..." seine Reifeprüfung ab. Es ist ein sehr erwachsenes Album geworden, auch mit nachdenklichen und traurigen Songs. Wahrscheinlich werden erst die Eltern seiner jetzigen Fangemeinde auf dieses Album kommen und dann – im Idealfall – auch ihre Kinder. Diese Sammlung an Evergreens ist es auf jeden Fall wert, auch von der heutigen Generation gehört zu werden. Und wer wenn nicht Robbie hat das Zeug dazu, die Kids dorthin mitzunehmen?

Betreten wir die Zeitmaschine. Auf in die 50er und 60er - die goldenen Tage des Sands Hotels in Las Vegas, als das "Rat Pack" - Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin und Sammy Davis Jr. - die feinsten Damen der Gesellschaft unterhielt und die Cocktailparties in der Stadt der Lichter ewig dauerten. Also lockert die Krawatte und nehmt einen Schluck Bourbon – Dandy Robbie nimmt uns mit auf einen kleinen Ausflug.
"Swing When You're Winning" ist eine Hommage an diese gute alte Zeit des Showbusiness, als der Broadway den Takt vorgab und Hollywood gemütlich nachzog. Viele Erinnerungen an alte Filmsoundtracks werden wach. So findet sich auch der George Gershwin Song "They Can't Take That Away From Me" auf der Platte, zu dem einst Ginger Rogers und Fred Astaire über die Bühne wirbelten. Jetzt als Duett mit Rupert Everett aufgenommen, swingt der Song noch immer. Hat man doch die Originalbesetzung der Bigband die einst Frank Sinatra begleitete für die Aufnahmen gewinnen können. Sogar der 83-jährige Pianist – Bill Miller, er begleitete Sinatra von 1951 bis zu seinem Tod – war mit von der Partie und flankiert Robbie bei "One For My Baby".
Mister Francis Albert Sinatra gibt sich dank moderner Technik sogar selbst die Ehre ("It Was A Very Good Year") und lässt Robert Peter Williams spüren, dass er zwar stimmlich noch deutlich entfernt ist vom Meister, aber den richtigen Weg eingeschlagen hat. Auf "Mr. Bojangles" hört man sogar fast eine kleine Träne zwischen den Zeilen – das gewisse Etwas, das ein solcher Song braucht.
Ein echtes Highlight ist auch "Somethin' Stupid". Ursprünglich der Song von Frank und seiner Tochter Nancy, kam jetzt ein zuckersüßes Duett mit Nicole Kidman heraus, die überraschenderweise kristallklar, süß und sexy singen kann. Hut ab. Für echte Studioatmosphäre sorgen die auf der ganzen Platte verteilten kleinen Diskussionen mit der Aufnahmeleitung, den Musikern oder der inszenierte kleine Streit mit Jane Horrocks am Ende von "Things". Stichwort: "Were You Thinking about Kylie?" That's Entertainment!
In der Tat legt Williams mit "Swing..." seine Reifeprüfung ab. Es ist ein sehr erwachsenes Album geworden, auch mit nachdenklichen und traurigen Songs. Wahrscheinlich werden erst die Eltern seiner jetzigen Fangemeinde auf dieses Album kommen und dann – im Idealfall – auch ihre Kinder. Diese Sammlung an Evergreens ist es auf jeden Fall wert, auch von der heutigen Generation gehört zu werden. Und wer wenn nicht Robbie hat das Zeug dazu, die Kids dorthin mitzunehmen?
