Lange war man schon gespannt, was die Erfinder des Big Beat wohl an akustischen Leckerbissen auf ihrem neuen Album präsentieren würden. Und das Warten hat sich auf alle Fälle gelohnt, sprühen die "Chemical Brothers" auf ihrem neuen Longplayer nur so von innovativer Energie, die jeden Takt von "Surrender" zum Erweckungserlebnis werden läßt.
Los geht's mit "Music: Response", das in seiner locker leichten, aber zugleich auch verspielten kompositorischen Machart und den unweigerlich an "Kraftwerk" erinnernden Sprachsamples anzeigt, daß sich die "Chemical Brothers" längst nicht mehr als Speerspitze des Big Beat verstehen. Kein Wunder also, daß man mit "Let Forever Be", das vor allem durch die außergewöhnliche Melodieführung von Noel Gallagher (Oasis) besticht, auch ein eher traditionelles Rockstück auf "Surrender" findet. Überhaupt konnten die chemischen Brüder wieder jede Menge Stars für eine Mitarbeit gewinnen. So auch Bernard Sumner (New Order), Bobbie Gillespie (Primal Sream) und Hope Sandoval von "Mazzy Star", deren zerbrechliche Stimme die Ballade "Asleep From Day" zu einem Highlight der neuen Scheibe werden läßt.
Ganz vom Dancefloor haben sich die neuen Chemical Brothers aber nicht verabschiedet, wie ihre erste Singleauskopplung "Hey Boy Hey Girl" eindrücklich unter Beweis stellt. Mein absoluter Favorit ist "The Sunshine Underground", das eine leichte, sphärisch-vielschichtige Stimmung erzeugt, um sich zum Ende hin, gleich der aufgehenden Sonne an einem klaren ruhigen Sommermorgen, den angenehm-intensiven Beats zu öffnen. Perfekt!
"Surrender" ist mehr von allem: intensiver, emotionaler und ambitionierter als alles, was die Brüder bisher gemacht haben.
