Meccore String Quartet

The Meccore String Quartet has turned international training into international success, performing at major venues across Western Europe and in North America. The group's publicity cultivates a cosmopolitan image and rarely mentions its Polish origins. The Meccore String Quartet was formed in Poland in 2007. The members, violinists Jarosław Nadrzycki and Wojciech Koprowski, violist Michał Bryła, and cellist Karol Marianowski, were all rising young Polish string players. The quartet's membership remained stable into the 2020s. The group was tutored by members of Poland's Camerata Quartet and then went on for studies at various top Western European chamber music training grounds: with the Artemis Quartet at Berlin's University of the Arts and the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel in Brussels and with violinist Günter Pichler of the Alban Berg Quartet at the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía in Madrid. The group members also point to lessons from pianist Alfred Brendel in the general interpretation of Beethoven's music as formative experiences. By the early 2010s, the Meccore String Quartet was beginning to rack up awards, including a first prize at the Max Reger International Chamber Music Competition in Sondershausen, Germany, and a second prize at the prestigious Wigmore Hall String Quartet Competition in London. The group earned a fellowship from the Irene Steels-Wilsing Stiftung, enabling them to release several albums in Poland. The quartet issued an album of quartets by Debussy and Karol Szymanowski on the Warner Classics label in 2016. The Meccore String Quartet has performed at such major venues as the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, Wigmore Hall in London, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and the Frick Collection in New York. The group is in demand for festival appearances at the Rheingau Musik Festival and Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in Germany, the Budapest Spring Festival, and the Festival Radio France Montpellier, among others. The ensemble was the first Polish string quartet to perform on Holocaust Remembrance Day in the German Bundestag, and it has appeared on programs on Germany's ZDF television network, BBC 3 radio, and WQXR radio in New York. The Meccore String Quartet recorded two albums for the audiophile label MDG, featuring music by Grieg and Tchaikovsky. The group returned in 2023 on the Capriccio label with an album of chamber music by Krzysztof Penderecki. Members of the quartet lead chamber music classes at several Polish universities.
