Gang Of Four wussten, wie man die Stimmung anheizt! Im grauen und kalten Leeds riefen der Sänger Jon King, der Gitarrist Andy Gill, der Bassist Dave Allen und der Schlagzeuger Hugo Burnham mit tanzenden Gitarrenklängen und aneckendem Groove eine Post-Punk-Revolution ins Leben. Bereits auf ihrem ersten Album Entertainment! aus dem Jahre 1979 wurde schnell deutlich, wie einzigartig diese Band war. Gill überrollt mit seinen sechs Saiten und frischen Melodien alles, was ihm in die Quere kommt. Die heißen Rhythmen stehen im Gegensatz zu dieser Frische und erinnern in ihrer Beweglichkeit und ihrem Funk an die Talking Heads. Durch die Texte auf dem Album Entertainment! klingt das Ganze nur noch aggressiver, denn diese kann man nicht wirklich als „entertainend“ bezeichnen, sondern eher als kleine Molotowcocktails, die von Situationismus, Feminismus, Entfremdung, dem nord-irischen Konflikt, maoistischen Guerillas in Südamerika und vielen weiteren Überlegungen dieser Art handeln… Zusammen mit ihren Kollegen von The Fall, Père Ubu, Au Pairs oder auch PIL erschüttern Gang Of Four die Welt mit ihren Harmonien, Refrains, Soli und Melodien, die mit nichts vergleichbar sind. Dieser Radikalismus wird Jahre noch später Bands wie The Rapture, Radio 4, Editors, Bloc Party und Franz Ferdinand beeinflussen… © Marc Zisman/Qobuz
