Louis-Noël Bestion de Camboulas

Louis-Noël Bestion de Camboulas is a noted organist and harpsichordist and directs his own ensemble, Les Surprises. He has conducted research into little-known works and performance practices of the 17th and 18th centuries. Bestion de Camboulas was born in Lyon on December 2, 1989. He attended the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse (CNSMD) de Paris and the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Lyon, studying organ, harpsichord, chamber music, composition, and conducting. Among his large variety of teachers were François Espinasse on organ, Yves Rechsteiner and Catherine Latzarus, and Jean-Baptiste Robin in composition. Bestion de Camboulas broke through with competition victories: the Grand-Prix d'orgue Jean-Louis Florentz, Académie des Beaux-Arts at the Cathedral of Angers in France in 2009, and a first prize at the Gottfried-Silbermann Orgelwettbewerb in Freiburg, Germany in 2011. Bestion de Camboulas performed on organ or harpsichord with several leading Baroque ensembles, including the Orchestre Français des Jeunes Baroques of director Paul Agnew in 2009, and the Académie Baroque Européenne d'Ambronay, conducted by Hervé Niquet, in 2010. Around that time, in Bordeaux, he and viola da gamba player Juliette Guignard formed the ensemble Les Surprises, taking its name from an opéra-ballet by Rameau. At first, Guignard served as the ensemble's director; she later moved to the post of administrative director, and Bestion de Camboulas took over artistic direction. The group has collaborated with several major musical instrument museums in devising novel programming ideas. Bestion de Camboulas' Ambronay connections led to the group's signing with the Éditions Ambronay label, and Les Surprises released several albums on that label. Bestion de Camboulas remains active as a composer, issuing the pastiche opera Passione. He was heard as organist on the 2019 album Soleils couchants, but most of his recording activity has been with Les Surprises. With that group, he released several albums on the Alpha label, including Rameau chez le Pompadour, in 2022. Later that year, Les Surprises moved to Harmonia Mundi for the album An Unexpected Mozart.
