Dass Leonard Cohen immer noch inspiriert, ist nicht wirklich erstaunlich. Wenn Madeleine Peyroux ihr Album Anthem nach einem Song des kanadischen Songwriters benennt, spielt sie nicht mit verdeckten Karten. Vielleicht war es auch der Wunsch, von der herumgeisternden Billie Holiday noch ein Stück mehr Abstand zu nehmen, mit der sie oft verglichen wurde… Vor allem aber, weil Madeleine Peyroux im Jahre 2018 ganz einfach eben Madeleine Peyroux ist! Stil, Stimme, Komposition – sie beherrscht ihre Kunst bis ins kleinste Detail und sie braucht es nicht mehr unter Beweis stellen. Diesmal tritt sie etwas kürzer bei Coverversionen und präsentiert neue Songs, die sie selber oder zusammen mit Patrick Warren (Bonnie Raitt, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen), Brian MacLeod (Leonard Cohen, Tina Turner), David Baerwald (Joni Mitchell, Sheryl Crow) und dem Produzenten Larry Klein (Joni Mitchell, Shawn Colvin, Herbie Hancock) geschrieben hat. Oft recht engagierte Texte, die sie in sanfte, ja sogar eindeutig melancholische Musik einbettet. Hier scheint überall Schwerelosigkeit zu herrschen. Arrangements und Produktion sind samtweich strukturiert und auch dann, wenn sich Peyroux an Paul Eluards großartiges Gedicht Liberté heranwagt, macht sie das mit so viel Fingerspitzengefühl, dass die Worte nur noch schlagkräftiger werden. Wie so oft, lässt sie auch hier die Grenzen zwischen Jazz, Pop, Soul, Blues und Folk gekonnt verschwimmen und das ist umso besser. Es ist auch eine Art, ihrem Gesang – einer der fesselndsten Stimme ihrer Generation – noch mehr Geltung zu verleihen. © Max Dembo/Qobuz
