As much as some of Lil Wayne's most important material has appeared on the various installments of his long-running Tha Carter series, in his prime, the mixtapes that surrounded the various chapters of that series could be just as substantial. Tha Fix Before Tha VI aims to follow that tradition, its title suggesting the ten songs here will serve to tide fans over until the arrival of Tha Carter VI. Though there are some passable moments (the spirited rush of closing track "Good Morning," the interplay between Fousheé's melodic sung/rapped parts, and Wayne's liminal space flows on "Chanel No. 5"), the majority of Tha Fix Before Tha VI falls miserably short of former mixtape glories, offering up mostly undercooked leftovers and confused misfires. When the project is at its weakest, there are some contenders for career-worst songs, which is saying something for the artist who gave us 2010's rap-rock disaster Rebirth. The emo guitars, faux-rocking drums, and Auto-Tuned vocals of "Tuxedo" trigger flashbacks of that difficult era, while the completely inadvisable "Tity Boi" pairs one of Wayne's least inspired performances with a faceless EDM instrumental. There's a bit of interesting experimentation on the anxious trap track "Birds," and a great beat from Cool & Dre on "To the Bank" that chops up dramatic string samples to cinematic effect, but more often than not, promising production is wasted on songs where Wayne sounds like he's on autopilot. Lead single "Kat Food" might have worked if it was half as long, with its lascivious hooks well matched with buzzy bass, but as Wayne passes the three-minute mark of the nearly five-minute song, he sounds like he's been thinking about something else for a while as he distractedly goes through the motions. Lil Wayne's discography includes some of the most incredible music to ever grace the rap genre, but if Tha Fix Before Tha VI is any indication of where he's going next, it might usher in the sad realization that the days when Wayne could confidently proclaim himself the "best rapper alive" are behind him.
