Even though Alexander Scriabin proved repeatedly that he could compose major works in large forms, his finest ideas often found expression in piano miniatures, which he usually called poèmes, when morceaux or a more genre-specific title didn't come to mind. Garrick Ohlsson has recorded the complete poèmes for Hyperion, and the program is ordered by opus numbers, from the Deux poèmes, Op. 32, to the Deux danses, Op. 73, so the progression of Scriabin's stylistic development can be followed quite easily, from his middle, impressionistic phase to the more complex atonality of his last period. Ohlsson, who established his international reputation in the music of Chopin, brings the same commitment and vision to Scriabin, who in musical terms was Chopin's heir. The passion and intensity that have been noted in Ohlsson's Arabesque recordings of Chopin's complete piano works, which have been reissued by Hyperion in an impressive collection, is still strong in these performances, which were recorded in 2013. The recordings give the piano ideal clarity and natural resonance, in keeping with Hyperion's high standards.
