For the first time ever, this compilation brings to light the richness of Bryan Ferry’s work as a solo artist. In the ‘70s, his musical career was remarkably unique, as he alternated between leading his group Roxy Music (releasing eight solo albums between 1972 and 1982) and albums released under his own name. In 1973, Roxy Music came out with their first two albums, but this didn’t stop Bryan Ferry from finding the time to record These Foolish Things, entirely composed of covers spanning the period between the 1930s and 1960s. Bob Dylan’s “A Hard Rain’s a-Gonna Fall” opened the album, which fittingly also kicks off this retrospective.
When Bryan Ferry sings on his own, he often takes on the role of an interpreter, celebrating the work of others and reimagining pop music’s greatest classics. Other than Bob Dylan, he also performs songs by Jerome Kern (“Smoke Gets In Your Eyes”), Herman Hupfield (“As Time Goes By”), Jay Hawkins (“I Put A Spell On You”), John Lennon (“Whatever Gets You Thru The Night”), and Robert Palmer (“Johnny & Mary”). Of course, this current album also contains songs written by Ferry himself, including his two greatest hits, both released in 1985: “Slave To Love” and “Don’t Stop The Dance.” As a solo artist, Ferry is defined by his ability to effortlessly jump between genres. He moves from rock and roll to power ballads, from jazz to new wave, even throwing traditional music styles into the mix. Yet despite this versatility, Retrospective stands out for its cohesiveness. For the first time ever, this compilation brings to light the richness of Bryan Ferry’s work as a solo artist. In the ‘70s, his musical career was remarkably unique, as he alternated between leading his group Roxy Music (releasing eight solo albums between 1972 and 1982) and albums released under his own name. In 1973, Roxy Music came out with their first two albums, but this didn’t stop Bryan Ferry from finding the time to record These Foolish Things, entirely composed of covers spanning the period between the 1930s and 1960s. Bob Dylan’s “A Hard Rain’s a-Gonna Fall” opened the album, which fittingly also kicks off this retrospective.
When Bryan Ferry sings on his own, he often takes on the role of an interpreter, celebrating the work of others and reimagining pop music’s greatest classics. Other than Bob Dylan, he also performs songs by Jerome Kern (“Smoke Gets In Your Eyes”), Herman Hupfield (“As Time Goes By”), Jay Hawkins (“I Put A Spell On You”), John Lennon (“Whatever Gets You Thru The Night”), and Robert Palmer (“Johnny & Mary”). Of course, this current album also contains songs written by Ferry himself, including his two greatest hits, both released in 1985: “Slave To Love” and “Don’t Stop The Dance.” As a solo artist, Ferry is defined by his ability to effortlessly jump between genres. He moves from rock and roll to power ballads, from jazz to new wave, even throwing traditional music styles into the mix. Yet despite this versatility, Retrospective stands out for its cohesiveness. It’s proof that Bryan Ferry has a truly unique style.
