The electric French horn player/flutist/pianist/arranger/composer David Amram wrote the score for the Broadway show On the Waterfront, whose story line differed a bit from the famous movie. The ten selections included on this CD stand apart from the play and include some fine jazz playing from a variety of all-stars. In addition to Amram, the key voices include trumpeter Jimmy Owens, altoist Jerry Dodgion, and trombonist Slide Hampton. Although it is doubtful if any of the themes (some of which are quite haunting) will catch on as standards, they work quite well on this disc and display one of the many aspects of David Amram's musical talents.
