New versions of this historic piece are common. However, very little is actually known about it, at least in terms of its musical interpretation, which tends to vary according to the times and fashions. The reading of Stéphane Fuget’s text in this recording is both fascinating and innovative in equal measure. After having collaborated with a large number of ensembles and musicians across the globe, in 2018 the harpsichordist, pianist and conductor created his own ensemble in residence at the Palace of Versailles, Les Epopées. The interpretive vision he proposes here focuses on intensity of expression and a demanding choice of playing modes and articulations; a resolutely new approach.
The first volume is devoted to Jean-Baptiste Lully’s Grands Motets, featuring Dies Irae and De Profundis, a grandiose piece which was performed during the funeral of Queen Marie-Thérèse at the basilica of Saint-Denis in 1683. This ceremonial display of grief intended to touch the hearts of the mourners, and it’s remarkably performed here by Marc Mauillon, Benoît Arnould and Renaud Bres, who are amongst the many soloists on this recording made in the Royal Chapel of Versailles (which hadn’t yet been built at the time of the motets’ creation). O Lachrymae, the motet which completes the album, is older and defined by a chiaroscuro which alternates a sense of pathos with much lighter moments. © François Hudry/Qobuz
