This new version of Joseph Haydn's The Creation (Die Schöpfung) is the result of a series of concerts, half of which were cancelled due to Covid-19. There is more than one reason that it has appeal. First of all, it meets the expectations of Jordi Savall in a repertoire where he excelled in 2007 with his very beautiful version of the orchestra only version of Seven Last Words of Christ on the Cross, which boded well for the future of the last oratorios of the same Joseph Haydn. On the other hand, the Catalan musician's latest recordings bear the mark of his maturity and a mysticism that permeates all his work.

Impressed by his discovery of Handel's oratorios, which he had heard during his stays in London, Haydn decided to revitalize the genre at the end of his life with The Creation and The Seasons, two oratorios which, in turn, made a strong impression on the young Beethoven. Composed on a libretto by Gottfried van Swieten and inspired by Milton’s Paradise Lost, a long epic poem about the origin of man from a Christian perspective not devoid of a sometimes-naive pantheism that Haydn would underline with distinctive genius. This oratorio brings together many new changes. From the introductory Chaos that struck the first listeners in 1798, to the sonic explosion of the C major fortissimo on the word "Licht" (Light), this spectacular work alone establishes the dreams of the late eighteenth century, before the bloodbath of the Reign of Terror. The old musician demonstrates all of his knowledge in this masterful score, but also his diversity, invention and freedom.

Jordi Savall and his excellent vocal and instrumental soloists give us a real vision of this extraordinary work. Savall has a sense of contrast, rhythm, colour and light that floods the whole work with the evocation of thunder, lightning, birdsong and the radiant beauty of certain melodies which Haydn found inspiration from in Mozart's last works. He quotes this several times as being a testament to his admiration and friendship. This joyful and committed version is among the very best. © François Hudry/Qobuz
