Heinrich Isaac (1450?-1517) was recognized by his contemporaries as one of the major figures of his era. Even by the standards of the Flemish polyphonists, he had a prestigious international career that took him to both Italy and Austria. In spite of this, Isaac is usually known only for a few famous pieces, the German song Innsbruck, ich muß dich lassen (Innsbruck, I must leave you) above all. The problem is that his work is difficult to reduce to a single-disc format. His sacred music was written in large cycles that represented enormous accomplishments but that are difficult to excerpt, and his secular pieces, in at least four different languages, are of many different types. This collaboration between the Flemish vocal group and the brass trio Oltremontano comes up with good solutions, at least on the secular side. The musicians divide Isaac's career into Flemish, Florentine, and Austrian-Bavarian phases. They include pieces that show the close relationship between secular and sacred thematic material in Isaac's work, exemplified in the "O Welt, ich muß rich lassen" parody of Isaac's famous song, but also present in other works on the album. And they also show Isaac's tendency to use instrumental melodies in vocal works, and vice versa. Some pieces are sung a cappella, some with stringed instruments, and some with Oltremontano's brasses. The result is a rather kaleidoscopic program that gives a feel for the range of Isaac's music, and above his status as one of the Western tradition's first great tunesmiths; Capilla Flamenca's performances are graceful and light. Highly recommended for anyone who has heard the Missa Carminum or one of the other frequently recorded Isaac works and wondered about his compositional world.
